These little birds are just so sweet! Most days they flock in, usually in large numbers and chattering excitedly as they arrive. Some years ago when we first moved to Scott Road, I recall being told that that these birds are rare in urban gardens. This is clearly no longer the case, the RSPB garden … Continue reading Invasion: long tailed tits!
Hellebores
Well it's cold, but not so bad as to keep us out of the garden. Back in Wales again, this stunning hellebore is thriving in the damp fertile soil. I don't know the name of this variety, it was already in the garden when we bought the cottage. I'll probably divide it later in the … Continue reading Hellebores
Snow, deep snow!
I just love the garden covered in snow, it's so crisp and clean - for a day or so....but the poor birds have such a hard time finding food. Being an urban garden, we only see fieldfares when there is persistent cover and this year is no exception, the apples we've put out for blackbirds … Continue reading Snow, deep snow!
Tree down!
Back in Wales, rather an unwanted surprise awaited us - we arrived, looked down over the garden and it took a few seconds to work what was wrong - for a huge branch had broken from the main trunk of one of the trees edging the river bank on our side and was lying across … Continue reading Tree down!
Not quite right
Last year I planted 3 red stemmed dogwoods in front of the mahonia japonica in an attempt to put in some dramatic impact behind the pond in winter. I think this has been successful, but to a limited degree as although the colour and structure combination is effective, they don't mingle properly - I'm going … Continue reading Not quite right
Gerberas
The sun is out again and a perfect opportunity to try and take an arty photo - Chris's arm is still aching from holding these up high in the air so that I could get the sky as background! Ought to mention that these lovely gerberas are shop bought, we didn't grow them in the … Continue reading Gerberas
Endings & beginnings
It's been a great autumn day in the garden at Aberglasne, sunny, dry and bright. I love the light at this time of year, low and bright on a good day, filtering through the thin spread of foliage still to fall. Somehow, there's a poignant feeling to the endings that are going on, making way … Continue reading Endings & beginnings
Remember, remember it’s the 5th November
No bonfire for us tonight, but it's been a great afternoon planting pots and I had company for most of it! I call this little chap Alfie, he follows me around the garden regularly and today I'd used some compost from a dark corner of the garden - full of worms so I was almost … Continue reading Remember, remember it’s the 5th November
Beautiful blooms
This is Rosa Munstead Wood, planted last year in our 'jewel garden'. This was first thing Sunday morning, heavy dew and a bud just blossoming, how lovely it is! This one is a dahlia, planted a couple of weeks ago, fabulously fluted petals, totally captivating, love it!
Sunny Days, yippee!
Great weekend with the weather, bulbs in, pots started, really enjoyed it
