Out and about in the cold last weekend, I came across this super cast iron fire grate going for a song in a small reclamation yard – just the thing for a cosy fire themed planter on a cold winter’s day!

Next stop – garden centre to pick up some plants suitable for a fireside theme – surprisingly simple!

I dug out a basket liner and cut it to shape to hold in the compost. Before planting, I played around with plant positioning to ensure that they were arranged to best effect. I added some sharp sand and fish blood and bone meal to the compost before inserting the ‘flame’ grass at the back, ‘fiery’primula for embers and a heuchera ‘Plum Pudding’ for coal effect.

Really pleased with this ‘pot’!
