This lilac beauty is in full flower on the fence behind our greenhouse – a glorious sight as I’m potting up seedlings. Clematis alpina flowers in early spring and is followed by attractive silky seedheads from which the nickname ‘Old Man’s Beard’ originate. A group one variety, clematis alpina requires little care other than restricting it to the size of your choice after flowering. This lovely climber should be planted in moist but well drained soil at least 30 to 60 cm away from the fence or wall it is to grow on so that the roots don’t dry out and as for all clematis, the roots need to be in shade. Full sun or partial shade suits this plant, it has a height and spread of 3m x 1.5m. Gorgeous!
